For a one-person shop or a DIY project, name + dimensions + job code is plenty. For a joinery with several people working in parallel, the production route and the QR code make a real difference to how smoothly work flows through the shop.

Printing and Sticking Labels in the Workshop

The label size should match the size of your parts and how much information you need to fit. These are the three most common formats in joinery and furniture-making:

A6 — 148×105mm

The standard format for furniture-making. Fits all the information with good legibility. Prints two-up on a standard A4 sheet, or on an A6 thermal printer. Recommended for most workshops.

A7 — 105×74mm

Good when you've got a lot of small parts, or limited space to stick a label. Less room for the full production route, but enough for name, dimensions and job code.

Thermal — 100×60mm

For thermal label printers such as Zebra, Dymo or Brother. Common in warehouses and larger shops. No toner or ink, and holds up well to dust and sawdust.

Practical tip: If you print on standard A4 self-adhesive sheets, you can fit two A6 labels per sheet. Trim with a guillotine or scissors and stick them straight onto the part — the cheapest option for a small workshop.

Not every label holds up equally well in a workshop. Sawdust, humidity and constant handling degrade plain paper labels within hours.

When to Label: Before or After Cutting?

The professional answer is: immediately after cutting, before the part leaves the saw area. At that moment the part is on its own and can't be confused with anything else. Once it's stacked among others, getting that certainty back is much harder.

In practice, the most efficient flow is:
